Business Process Management
Business Process Management is a set of policies, practices and
tools that enable an organisation to govern its business processes.
A critical aspect of this is a clear understanding of who owns and
maintains the processes, particularly where there are variants for
different business units, countries or languages and conflicts between
standardisation and flexibility.
Integration with IT system management is vital and clear boundaries
need to be defined between the business and IT service management.
Continuous improvement is an important component of BPM and is both
a culture and a set of processes. The organisation needs to have
a continuous improvement mentality and the processes to allow it
to happen smoothly.
BPM also needs to take into account factors such as ISO accreditation,
industry regulation (e.g. FSA) and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOx) compliance.
Establishing effective Business Process Management is a long term commitment,
typically taking several years.
BCC can help guide you through the process of establishing BPM through a
series of incremental steps. We can work with you to establish a roadmap
– a series of small projects – each delivering value but also contributing
to an overall goal.
A more formal approach is to use a Capability Maturity Model approach. This
defines levels of maturity of Business Process Management against a set of
measurable criteria. Periodic assessments can be taken across multiple sites
enabling focused improvement programmes to be planned and implemented.
